Would the Race Committee consider purchasing a small laptop computer for the Race officer's bag so that race results can be calculated more easily and less prone to errors. The laptop could be pre programed with the hadicap lists and a spred sheet set up requiring only the boat name and elapsed time to be entered. The spread sheet pre programed to do all the necessary calculations would produce results in minutes. If then entry was made available to the office, prints could be run off for the notice board before all the skippers got to the club!.
A small laptop for this sort of job wouldn't cost much more than £100.
How about it Committee?

This is a good idea Godfrey.  Thank you for the sudgestion.  It will take a little organising, but I will support the proposal.  We will discuss at our next meeting which is due around the middle of May

Just to support Robin's email I also think this is a good idea.
As a member of Robin's committee I will also ensure the idea is properly aired at our next meet mid may

If you are still thinking of doing this you might like to look at a piece of free software called Sailwave.

You give it a text file listing all of the boats and their handicaps. Then you just plug in the times for each boat and it calculates everything for you. It will also keep running rankings for a series of races. Once you have the results it will publish them in a number of formats including to a website.

It's been around for years and I thought development had stopped, but it looks like a new version was issued quite recently.

Just a thought. Might save a bit of the legwork.

Thanks Phillip.  I have come accross this software before, but thanks very much for bringing to our attention.  The biggest snag is that we have a different race officer for almost every race, thus posing experience issues with running the results on a lap top.

we acted as assistant Race Offcers once.  we had to haul flags up and down like a dubious simile.

how anybody could maintain a spreadsheet or database at the same thyme eludes me. :!:
