As so many of us consider this event to be the high spot of our sailing year, we thought it would be a good idea to devote a whole thread to boats who have space for crew members for this particular occasion.

This topic will stay at the top of this forum until after the actual race.

Good sailing everybody! :D

Dear SYC Member

We have been presented with a very rare opportunity.

Following a generous donation a couple of years ago, one of the nominated charities of the Royal Escape Race this year, is The John Merricks Sailing Trust. The Trust own, and in conjunction with the RYA, run a Farr 45 race boat called "John Merricks".

The "John Merricks" will be competing in this year's Royal Escape Race.

These boats normally race with up to 12 crew, 6 of which will be provided by regular crew from the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme. The remaining 6 places are available to Sussex Yacht Club members. These places are available to you; all you have to do is call me on the number below. The places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

What you need to know:

John Merricks is a full on race boat, you will not find much in the way of creature comforts. This is hard core racing. But rewarding and good fun if this suits the type of sailing/racing you enjoy doing.

You will join the boat in Brighton Marina on the morning of the race

After the race, the boat will most likely to return from Fecamp direct to the Solent on Saturday afternoon or evening.

There will be no accommodation on the boat for the weekend, so you will need to book a room locally or scrounge a berth on another boat if you know anyone who is competing who may have space.

The JMST are offering these places to us as a thank you for the donations we have made in the past and for our support again this year.
However. Given that this is such a great chance to compete on a formula one race boat I would like to think that those interested would be prepared to make a suitable contribution to the RER charities.

So what to do now? Go and have a look at the website via this link http://www.rya.org.uk/AboutRYA/programm ... heboat.htm

If you think that you are up for the challenge, give me a call now on 07836 632820 and reserve your place for a memorable Royal Escape Race onboard Farr 45 "John Merricks"

YOU ARE TOO LATE!  All the places on John Merricks have now gone.  I wish the very best of luck to those lucky enough to get the places. I have been fortunate enough to race on one of these boats.  I can tell you, you will have a great time and a swift passage to France.

If you are one of the lucky 6.  Make sure and take lots of pics and tell us all about it when you get back.

Have fun

Yes. Thanks for organising it. We will take lots of pics and please take pics of us - except you won't be able to get a good shot of our spinnaker.

Robin,

I wish to repeat what a good sail all those of us who went on the Farr 45 'John Merricks' had.  I suspect that those of us more elderly Farrs will find that this has been a once-in-a lifetime experience

our appreciation to the regular crew; and also to our SYC colleagues for being such excellent companions.

shame about the timing (you had to be there  )

thank you again for organising.  it was unmissable!

So pleased you all had a good time.  I was a little concerned that the wind may fail completely.  However, it did not and you got the chance to do lot's of sail changes etc to keep it interesting.

I am thinking of sailing Moonlight Saunter "rouind the corner" to St.Katherines.One week for the trip out.A week at St.Katherines doing the flesh pots or whatever.A week to get back.Nothing too adventurous with a timing of late September early October.I am looking for a crew of six which gives plenty of room and comfort.Single legs or the lot.I do have interest but would welcome others.Get in touch if interested.
