Royal Escape Race

Now that most of us have returned from Fecamp, I would welcome some feedback regarding the race and organisation. Did you miss not going to the Normandy? Was the venue this year for the short presentation on the Saturday evening OK?

it's probably unfair to draw any specific conclusions about the Royal Escape from this year's event simply because the conditions were so unfavourable for a really good long weekend.

obviously the race start was as impressive as ever, as was the organisation at the French side when we all finished.  for myself, i enjoy the wine & cheese on the Sunday at Societé des Régattes but clearly the sensible solution was to get out at sp*rrowf*rt on Sunday morning and run for home.

general banter around the harbourside was clearly inhibited by the weather. hey-ho, weather happens!

i have never been to the Normandy, but i do not feel i have missed anything.  please shout me down if you disagree!

i wonder whether this year's event has been affected by the simple fact that there were so many withdrawals last year - and sensibly so - which simply unsettled the occasion.

does anybody have any feelings about whether Societé des Régattes was as enthusiastic as they have seemed in the past?

for myself, i was delighted to get the chance to go and am looking forward to 2008.

Really enjoyed the weekend (nearly said the race, cant control the weather) for the weekend not to include the Normandy was a bonus. The prizegiving venue was crowded but still very good.

I think most people were being a little quiet on Saturday knowing that there was a lumpy crossing fairly early the next day but what potential for a huge party had the forecast been sensible.

I would like to thank the orginising committee for the blood sweat and tears which go into this event.

Without wishing to be dull I also think that the event this year was extremely well organised and efficiently administered.

The flat light and gloomy weather didn't spoil my weekend and those that were eager to try their toys out on the way home were surely smiles all round with the extra puff of wind we encountered! A nice contrast to the rather tranquil but tiring race conditions.

I particularly liked the friendly shouts of hello from the race officers mob on the end of the breakwater - rather nice to be welcomed to france like that.

Well done and thank you to Jill and her committee for organising.

Bet the Round Eddystone (this weekend) will not be as sociable!

Having completed several RERs over the years, I find each one has its own character, usually driven by the weather.  This year it was a shame that the forecast for the return trip was so bad.  Folk where concentrating on picking a return weather window rather than relaxing and enjoying themselves.

The success or otherwise of the race reception was easy to judge.  The concept must be a good idea, because loads of people turned up.  The venue needs some work on, we should have had access to the upper floor, mind you if it had been a sunny day, the presentations could have been made outside?

This year was my 25th RER.I have enjoyed/put up with numerous changes over the years.Yes I miss the RN presence & hospitality.The coach parties from The Old Ship added something-not sure what.Hotel Normandie?Good to start with.Recently a fall off in meal value & attendance.Talking of attendance I sensed an absence of the French this year.Their fault or ours?I believe the younger competitors should be making more entente cordial effort.Yes its hard going.Yes it takes you away from your mates.However it is necessaryand appreciated and builds bridges for the future.Us old timers wont go on forever.I take on board others comments on the weather and meteorologique casting a shadow.The organisation was up to its usual superb standard.

It is now fairly common knowledge that I am taking over as Royal Escape Race Committee Chair from Jill, who has done a sterling job over the past few years.

Although I am still getting my feet under the table so to speak I am already forming ideas as to the shape of 2008. If you have your own views then please feel free to call me on my mobile (ask the office for this as I don't really want to publish it online) or send me a personal message through this forum.

I have already put in a strongly worded request for sunshine and fair winds both ways.
