I predict changing times ahead, your comment "complacency & teetering on the edge of commitment" May be accurate but you could have stopped at "complacency".  For some time now I have expressed concerns that we fail to take care and support our club officers. Indeed, some even get ridiculed and criticised by senior members who should know better.  One day we will walk into our club to find a new sign over the door.  Sussex Marina & Boat Yard.  With a sub text "all club functions cancelled due to lack of volunteer helpers and member support"  The mighty SYC needs to take a look at it's self me thinks.

Sailing Section General Discussion / New Sails

Hi Jan

What you get out of a new set of sails will depend on your input and the input of the sail maker.  Thus it is essential that you find a sailmaker you can get on with.  This is more important than anything in my view.

Olli is a quarter tonner right?  Find out who's rocking in that world and look hard at the sail maker they use.  Most makers do a good job...the all use very similar design software.

I use North, but before that was with Sobstad...I only changed cos the guy I dealt with moved to North.  If you do choose to talk to North, give them a call and ask for Jeremy Robinson.  Top guy and very easy to talk to.

Good luck and have fun.

Hi Steve

Best of luck with your chairmanship of the RER Committee.  It will be challenging but rewarding.  The RER is part of SYC history and I am sure it's future is in safe hands with you.

Hi Jan

Sorry, been a bit busy recently!

Take note anyone reading this.  Jan has achieved a notable victory by winning the quarter tonne class.

Congratulations on a super result, you should be very pleased with that.  You beat some well respected and well sailed boats.  Well played Jan.

Hi Steve.  Brett is correct, however it is also confusing for other vessels if you fly both... Generally yachts racing will not be flying an Ensign, so we can choose to sail clear of them so as not to take their wind for example. Also in some sailing instructions, we are required to fly our ensign in the event that we retire from the race.

I have a solution.  We all get Sonatas, then you will be out long enough for the tide to build, and in any case they only draw 1.4 ish.

Kate and I had plenty of water by the time we got in with Rodeo!!  :D

Really please that you all had a good race on Saturday and that numbers are up.  A note of caution, we may confuse our new participants if we use old names for the marks. 1 and 6 as detailed in the handbook will do fine chaps!!

Having completed several RERs over the years, I find each one has its own character, usually driven by the weather.  This year it was a shame that the forecast for the return trip was so bad.  Folk where concentrating on picking a return weather window rather than relaxing and enjoying themselves.

The success or otherwise of the race reception was easy to judge.  The concept must be a good idea, because loads of people turned up.  The venue needs some work on, we should have had access to the upper floor, mind you if it had been a sunny day, the presentations could have been made outside?

Better than last year hey?

Thanks Jan.  It is interesting that from this debate we seem to rate access to the event and the racing area so highly, socials are important but not as important as the racing itself...hmmm.  I think that is a good thing.

Interesting this, as I once sailed Mojo all the way to Cork to do Cork Week, where the socials are legendary!!  We are odd folk us yacht racers
