As I sit and look at winds of 15 - 20 knots from the North West and clearing skies as forecast, am I alone in thinking that the decision to abandon the Christmas Cracker 4 race was taken rather prematurely?

On Sunday at around 1000 the Shoreham Weather Station on the Beach was showing a force 7 with gusts of over 40 knots.The rain was lashing down and the surf ugly.As some of my crew have a distance to travel-like yourself-I stood them down.The Met Forecast did identify the wind veering "later" but still talked of "Occassional force 8".As you say it certainly veered rather abruptly and then fell away and by our start time of 1310 was quite suitable.The wisdom of hindsight ! All in all I support the decision made-perhaps its my advancing years and thin blood ?

Is there any virtue in attempting to use the forum as an impromptu poll on who thought they might be prepared to go out at midmorning on the Sunday?  As it happened, we had planned not to sally forth anyway, but if we had committed ouselves to crewing I should undoubtedly have emulated the Bard's whining schoolboy:

'...creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.'
